Mini Split Maintenance: Homeowner & Professional Care

How to clean your reusable filters every 4–6 weeks, prevent musty odors, protect the outdoor condenser, and know when professional deep cleaning is required.

The 4-Step Homeowner Filter Cleaning Routine (Every 4–6 Weeks)

Clean air filters are vital for ductless systems. Because mini split blowers operate at low static pressure, even a light layer of dust reduces CFM airflow and forces the inverter compressor to work harder.

1

Turn Power Off at the Remote

Turn the system off and wait for the motorized louvers to fully close before opening the front access panel.

2

Gently Lift and Slide Out the Mesh Filters

Grasp the bottom tabs on each mesh screen, lift slightly upward to release the retention clips, and slide the filters downward.

3

Vacuum or Rinse Under Lukewarm Water

Rinse from the clean side through to the dirty side with lukewarm tap water. For greasy kitchen areas, use a drop of mild dish soap. Do not use stiff brushes.

4

Dry Completely Before Reinstalling

Allow the filters to dry fully in shaded air before clicking them back into place. Never operate the mini split without filters installed.

Preventing Musty Odors (The End-of-Season Dry Out)

During summer cooling, moisture constantly condenses on the indoor evaporator coil. If you shut the unit off for the season while the coil is still damp, trapped moisture can breed organic mold and cause “dirty sock syndrome” odors.

Pro Tip: At the end of the cooling season, run the unit in FAN ONLY mode for 30 to 45 minutes on high speed. This evaporates all residual moisture from the coil and blower wheel before winter.

When Is Professional Deep Cleaning Needed?

Even with diligent filter washing, fine microscopic dust and airborne cooking oils bypass mesh screens and adhere to the wet aluminum fins and cylindrical blower wheel blades.

We recommend scheduling a professional teardown pressure wash every 12 to 24 months to sanitize the blower wheel, chemically bathe the coil, and flush the condensate drain line.
