Mini Split Repair & Diagnostics
Targeted troubleshooting for ductless heat pumps and AC systems across Virginia.
Ductless mini splits use sophisticated variable-speed inverter electronics, electronic expansion valves, and multiple temperature thermistors. Guessing at parts or blindly topping off refrigerant without finding a leak wastes time and money. We focus on pinpoint diagnosis to identify the root cause of the failure.
Common Mini Split Issues We Resolve
If your ductless unit is exhibiting any of these symptoms, an accurate diagnostic evaluation will pinpoint the exact fault.
Not Cooling or Weak Airflow
Unit runs but blows room-temperature air. Often caused by severe filter clogging, electronic thermistor failure, restricted outdoor coil airflow, or low refrigerant charge from a flare fitting leak.
Not Heating or Stuck in Defrost
Heat pump fails to produce warm air in winter or remains stuck in defrost cycle. Often tied to reversing valve malfunction, outdoor thermistor faults, or iced outdoor coils.
Water Dripping from Indoor Unit
Water leaking down interior walls is typically caused by a clogged condensate drain line, algae in the drain pan, improper drain pitch, or a failed condensate lift pump.
Blinking Lights & Error Codes
Indoor display LED flashes a code pattern. Modern inverter systems use onboard microprocessors to signal specific circuit board, sensor, or communication anomalies.
Unusual Noises or Vibrations
Grinding, clicking, whistling, or rattling sounds can indicate a failing blower wheel bearing, loose mounting bracket, debris in the outdoor fan, or expansion valve turbulence.
Short Cycling or Tripping Breakers
Unit starts and abruptly shuts off, or trips the electrical breaker immediately. Indicates possible compressor motor winding faults, inverter IPM module failure, or voltage drops.
Service Across Most Major Brands
We service and diagnose most major residential mini split brands operating in Virginia, whether we originally installed your equipment or not.
Our Diagnostic Approach
We don’t just swap parts and hope for the best. Our diagnostic process includes:
- DC bus voltage and inverter power module testing
- Resistance testing of coil, discharge, and ambient thermistors
- Electronic ultrasonic refrigerant leak detection on flares and coils
- Blower motor tachometer feedback and condensate drainage verification
Mini Split Repair FAQs
Answers to common repair questions.
Why does my mini split need refrigerant added?
Refrigerant is never naturally consumed or burned during operation. If your system is low on refrigerant, there is an active leak—typically at a flared tubing joint or service valve. Adding refrigerant without finding and repairing the leak is temporary and bad for the compressor.
When is it smarter to replace rather than repair?
If your system is over 10 to 12 years old, uses phased-out R-22 or legacy refrigerants, or requires a major component replacement (like an inverter compressor or main board) that approaches half the cost of a new system with a full 10-year warranty, replacement is generally the wiser financial choice.
