What Is a Mini Split & How Does It Work?
A ductless mini split is a high-efficiency heating and cooling heat pump system that delivers conditioned air directly into individual living spaces without relying on central sheet metal ductwork.
The Core Components of a Mini Split System
A standard ductless system consists of two primary physical pieces connected through a small 3-inch wall penetration:
1. The Indoor Air Handler
Mounted inside the conditioned room (on a wall, low near the floor, or flush in the ceiling). It contains an aluminum evaporator coil, a quiet tangential crossflow blower fan, reusable air filters, and room temperature thermistors.
2. The Outdoor Condenser / Heat Pump
Placed outside the home on a pad or wall brackets. It houses the variable-speed inverter compressor, condenser coil, propeller fan, electronic expansion valves, and intelligent microprocessors.
These two units are linked by a line set—a bundle containing insulated copper refrigerant pipes, high-voltage communication/power wiring, and a flexible condensate drain tube that carries condensed moisture outside.
How Heat Pump Technology Heats and Cools
Unlike a furnace or baseboard heater that creates heat by burning fossil fuels or energizing electrical resistance coils, a heat pump transfers heat from one place to another using thermodynamic phase changes of refrigerant.
- In Cooling Mode: The indoor unit absorbs thermal heat from the room air into cold liquid refrigerant. The refrigerant vaporizes, travels through the line set to the outdoor compressor, where pressure is increased, and heat is released outside.
- In Heating Mode: A 4-way reversing valve shifts refrigerant flow in reverse. The outdoor unit extracts ambient heat energy from outdoor winter air, compresses it, and transfers that concentrated warmth inside.
Why Inverter Compressors Are Game Changers
Traditional central HVAC systems use single-stage compressors that operate like a light switch: 100% on or 100% off. This results in frequent temperature swings, noisy blasts of air, high inrush electric currents, and short runtimes that fail to remove summer humidity.
Modern mini splits feature variable-speed inverter compressors that modulate continuously from 10% to 100% capacity. Once the room reaches the target setpoint, the inverter dials down to a low, whisper-quiet idle speed that maintains the exact temperature with fractional electrical draw.
